WOGO Joins the Global #GivingTuesday Movement
- Pledges to return to DRC to continue their mission of restoring mobility through life-altering joint replacement surgeries—
ROANOKE, VIRGINIA – November 18, 2016 – Women Orthopaedic Global Outreach (WOGO) has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.
WOGO invites you to participate in #GivingTuesday by making a gift to us in support of our return trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 2016 we completed 42 joint replacement surgeries in Kinshasa, DRC and we plan to continue that mission. We will be returning to DRC to continue our mission of restoring mobility and improving lives in developing nations. Please support WOGO at https://wogo.org/product/donate/.
Occurring this year on November 29, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick-off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.
WOGO has joined the #GIvingTuesday movement because we believe that sharing our talents with others is the most fulfilling way to use them. The movement allows us to share our story with others and encourage the spirit of giving to grow greater than ever before. This #GivingTuesday our goal is to share the WOGO story with a wider audience to gain followers while at the same time generating support for our upcoming medical mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo where we will continue replacing joints to change the lives not only of our patients but of their families and communities.
“We want to transform lives in under-served global communities by reducing the chronic burden of arthritis and disability through total joint reconstruction,” said Dr. Robyn Hakanson, WOGO Chairperson and Surgeon. “The need for mobility is great in DRC where the main mode of transportation is on foot. Providing joint replacement surgeries changes lives and leaves the communities we visit healthier, more knowledgeable and inspired to reach beyond prior limits. The #GivingTuesday movement allows us to share this goal beyond our immediate borders and encourage others to join our mission”
92Y − a cultural center in New York City that, since 1874, has been bringing people together around its core values of community service and giving back − conceptualized #GivingTuesday as a new way of linking individuals and causes to strengthen communities and encourage giving. In 2015, the fourth year of the movement, #GivingTuesday brought together over 45,000 partners in 71 countries and helped raise nearly $117 Million online in the US alone.
“We have been incredibly inspired by the generosity in time, efforts and ideas that have brought our concept for a worldwide movement into reality,” said Henry Timms, founder of #GivingTuesday and executive director of 92Y. “As we embark on our fifth year of #GivingTuesday, we are encouraged by the early response from partners eager to continue making an impact in this global conversation.”
