WOGO Team Sets Medical Missions for Cuba and a Return to the DRC

Pinehurst, NC – June 11, 2017 – Women Orthopaedist Global Outreach (WOGO.org) announced the location of their next two medical missions for 2018 and 2019. The team will travel to Havana, Cuba following recent Operation Walk team visits by Operation Walk Los Angeles and Operation Walk Carolinas. The team will be in Cuba in May 2017.  In 2019 the team will be returning with the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation (DMF.org) to the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The medical mission has been scheduled on the calendar for July 2019.

Dr. Robyn Hakanson, WOGO surgeon and founding member stated, “WOGO is proud to follow our fellow Operation Walk teams to the original location for Operation Walk, Cuba. Twenty years after Operation Walk Founder, Dr. Dorr lead the original team to Havana we will be following in his footsteps. In addition, the WOGO team is thrilled to continue our partnership with the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation and with our relationship with Mr. Mutombo.  Together, our teams can bring mobility back to many more individuals in the Congo who are in need of reconstructive knee surgeries. We are excited to have our next two trips scheduled.”

Women Orthopaedist Global Outreach (WOGO) is a not-for-profit volunteer medical service organization led by female orthopaedic surgeons. They have seen first-hand the power of joint replacement surgery to transform the lives of those who suffer from arthritis, the most disabling chronic disease in the world.

The Dikembe Mutombo Foundation (DMF.org) is dedicated to improving the health, education and quality of life for the people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Foundation strives to accomplish this goal through an emphasis on primary health care and disease prevention, the promotion of health policy, health research and increased access to health care education for the people of the Congo.

WOGO is incorporated as a team of Operation Walk (www.operationwalk.org), a 20-year non-profit volunteer medical service organization that provides free surgical treatment in developing countries (and occasionally the United States) for patients that have no access to life-improving care for arthritis or other debilitating bone and joint conditions. Twelve other Operation Walk teams have successfully completed missions in nine different countries. The team has joined their global campaign because, although joint replacement surgeries have been performed on thousands of patients, millions more are needed.
